The scanned image of Peking and vicinity was meticulously surveyed by E. Bretschneider at a scale of 1 : 400,000. Using Landsat Thematic Mapper satellite data as the basemap, the image was georegistered on the position of the walled city around the Imperial Palace and several outlying towns..
No attempt has been made to rubber-sheet the map image to fit the actual positions of the terrain, since there are some inherent inaccuracies in the placement of those features on the original map. Hundreds of named features on the map warrant in-depth study.
