iii) I would like to take simple algebraic expressions and
perform simple mathmatical operations on them such as addition,
subtraction, and multiplication.
iv) I would have a servlet that would accept input algebraic text in
a textbox. This sting would be converted and manipulated with JAVA code
into an simplified version of the algebraic expression. This would
then be converted into XML and transformed
by XSLT into an expression passed back to the user.
V) I enjoy mathmatics and find symbolic manipulation an interesting topic.
Just about all computers have built in calculators for solving numerical
problems, but you need to buy expension software to do anything with
symbolic calculations.
Vi) I will need to implement a server and servlet that will accept the
text string representing the algebraic expression. I Will need to write
Java code to parse the algebraic expression. I will use a stack to push
and pop numbers and operators so I will know how they are correctly arranged.
I will create a structure similar to a DOM tree which I will manipulate to
simplify the expression. The resulting structure can then be parsed into
XML and transformed with XSLT for diplaying to the user. The technologies
involved will include XML parsers, servelts, XSLT, and JAVA. I will have
to figure out how to manipulate the expression tree to produce a simplified
expression tree.
vii) As for questions for the staff, I don't have any yet, but I'm sure there
will be many.
